Der übergewichtige ehemalige Literaturprofessor Arthur Opp lebt seit Jahren isoliert in Brooklyn. Der 18-jährige Kel kämpft um Abschluss und Sportstipendium, belastet von der Krankheit seiner Mutter. Als sie, Arthurs frühere Studentin, ihn um Hilfe bittet, kreuzen sich die zwei verschiedenen Leben.
